About the Author
Juan Medina retired from Mental Health Systems Inc. in June 2016 following more than 25 years in job development and employment support. During his career Medina was sought out by mental health providers for his expertise in employment-related services, specifically teaching about how employment can lead to a person’s recovery from mental illness and other related disorders. A few of Medina’s commitments during his career include chair of the Job Developer’s Network, member of the Behavioral Health Adult and Housing councils in the area of employment, member of San Diego Workforce Partnership’s “Working Well” Committee, member of the Mental Health Services Act Workforce, Education and Training taskforce, and advisory member for the county probation department training officers on domestic violence. Medina was voted the “Vocational Support Person of the Year” in 2015 at the 29th annual San Diego Behavioral Health Recognition dinner. In addition, he was selected for inclusion in the 2013 edition of The Latino American Who’s Who, a New York-based biographical publication. In addition, Medina promoted awareness on disabilities and helped erase the stigma surrounding mental illness through employment. He now lives in San Diego with his wife, son and two grandchildren –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

This book deals with a current and important topic. The author Medina, provided strong descriptions of what life was growing up in a Bordertown during the 50, 60’s and how he along with many other were treated like a second class citizen in what is now territory controlled mostly by smugglers. This darn thing should open the eyes of every American who favors an open border ideology. The author experienced the ordeal, he was directly involved in smuggling narcotics from Mexico into the United States! The book is interesting, like a nice ice cream cone, is short, sweet and well worth it. One person found this helpful

Amazing story!..This book brilliantly explains the 50 & 60s border lifestyle and its struggles while trying to stay out of prison and Alive. I love the authors attention to detail that allowed me to make clear images in my head about the scene he explains. Great read!

This is a MUST read a book. It is a true story about a young man during his youth who went down the wrong path to help support his family. Eventually he redeemed himself through his work career helping thousands of economically disadvantaged youth and mentally challenged individuals find meaningful employment. The unimaginable tragedy struck. You won’t be able to find put this book down as you see the sacrifices he and his family endure each day. Great story, Juan, my co-worker and good friend

A 100% recommended book. Excellent story, it’s interesting, shocking, sad, real, enriching and motivating, it has everything. The interesting and dramatic thing about this story is that Medina tells us cruel and dangerous events, which he lived in his own flesh. The border between the United States and Mexico is a place full of stories and this story is one of the most interesting that has been written. This book taught me to understand a lot about what is currently happening at the border. If we think that our destiny is one and we can never change it, the author shows us that we are wrong. There is always a better way and always better things will come. Thank you for sharing your story and making us live it.

Another Great Book about my hometown San Ysidro, CA that I Highly Recommend. The author (Juan Medina) is a childhood friend that navigates us through the Highs and Lows of growing up in a USA/Mexico Border Town that is directly across the border from Tijuana, Mexico. As kids growing up, we were fortunate to have Very Good Teachers and Little League Baseball Coaches that were Outstanding Role Models for us. As we became Teenagers and young Adults, the author describes how the local USA / Mexico Border environment of smuggling Illegal Drugs (Marijuana, Heroin, Cocaine) was a constant temptation that was part of daily life. The author describes how he was sucked into this Very Dangerous Lifestyle and somehow was lucky to survive it, learn from the experience and turn his life around to become a Positive Role Model for younger kids growing up in a similar Barrio environment. Bravo Juan Medina Bravo…! The Border Town Memories.
